Landmark Communications Poll Release, Top GA Races

Deal leads Barnes 49-42% heading into final days
Attorney General: Olens (R) leads Hodges (D) 47-40%
School Superintendent: Barge (R) leads Martin (D) 48-36%

Despite a slight tightening in the race for governor, Republican Nathan Deal continues to lead Democrat Roy Barnes by 49 to 42 percent. Libertarian John Monds carries 4 percent.

“Nothing has effectively changed since we last conducted a statewide survey a week ago,” said Mark Rountree, President of Landmark Communications. “Barnes’ support has increased slightly as traditional voting groups solidify. But Deal’s numbers have not moved much. The attacks on him by Barnes are not working at this point.”

FIRST BALLOT TEST ON A POTENTIAL RUNOFF VOTE: Landmark asked voters how they would vote between Deal and Barnes in the event of a runoff election. 51 percent of voters chose Deal and 43 percent chose Barnes – an 8-point margin.

Rountree said, “Libertarians decidedly come down on the side of Deal. Third party voters say they would support Deal over Barnes by a 3 to 1 margin."

In the race for Attorney General, Republican Sam Olens leads Democrat Ken Hodges by 47 to 40 percent.

In the race for School Superintendent, Republican John Barge leads Democrat Joe Martin by 48 to 36 percent.

Landmark Communications polled 1,686 randomly selected active voters on Tuesday, October 26. Only voters who said they would “definitely vote” or “likely vote” are included in the final analysis. Voters who did not identify themselves as “definitely” or “likely” to vote were not included in the final analysis. 25.8 percent of respondents were African American, a traditional number for gubernatorial year elections in Georgia. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.4 percent.

First Student-Led Gubernatorial Debate to be Aired Live on GPB Oct 3rd

In an effort to increase voter participation among college students, student leaders from universities across the State of Georgia have planned a gubernatorial debate between the three candidates in the Governor’s race: Roy Barnes (D), Nathan Deal (R), and John Monds (I). All three candidates have confirmed to participate in the live debate on Sunday, October 3rd from 78pm on Georgia Public Broadcasting, located on Fourteenth Street in Atlanta. The debate will focus on issues pertinent to voters aged 18‐30, including the economy, transportation, taxes, higher education, and energy policy.

Students will have the opportunity to pose questions to the candidates via the debate website www.gastudentvote.com. Questions will be selected from that website and used during the debate. The interactive and web‐based nature of the debate makes it truly unique and helps students connect with the election cycle in ways previously unexplored or underutilized. In addition to the debate, universities will hold voter registration drives on their campuses and promote active participation in the various statewide and federal races.

The studio audience will be principally comprised of students representing various universities and colleges throughout Georgia. The studio can accommodate 250 audience members. School administrators and the Board of Regents have been invited to attend, as well. All universities are invited to attend the debate and submit questions for the candidates. In addition to a student audience, each university is encouraged to host its own live viewing party on campus, especially to accommodate the schools who located too far to attend the debate. Debate watching parties will increase total audience size and participation throughout the state.

The debate has primarily been organized by the Student Government Association of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Additionally, the student governments from the University of Georgia, Georgia College and State University, and Morehouse College have chosen to participate as principal partner schools and will each have a student panelist asking questions to the candidates during the debate. Susan Hoffman, a GPB host and producer, will be the moderator for the debate. Her fifteen years of experience with GPB brings additional expertise and guidance. GPB has been an excellent process throughout the entire planning process, and broadcasting the debate live on their network will greatly increase the scope of this debate.

MAG, Others Sponsoring Free Public Forum for all Three Gubernatorial Candidates

Cobb Energy Centre, Saturday August 28

The Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) is sponsoring a free public forum that will feature Georgia’s gubernatorial candidates – Democrat Roy Barnes, Republican Nathan Deal, and Libertarian John Monds – from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 28 at the Cobb Energy Centre in Atlanta.

“This is going to be a great opportunity to hear the candidates address the most important and challenging issues we face as a state in a very intimate way,” says MAG President Gary C. Richter, M.D., who will serve as the event’s host. “We are genuinely excited – and we are encouraging the general public to attend.”

The media panel will feature some of Atlanta’s leading journalists, including John Bachman with WSB-TV (ABC), Wendy Saltzman with WGCL-TV (CBS), and Kyle Wingfield with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Wingfield will serve as the program moderator.

WXIA will “stream” the entire event live at http://www.11alive.com/bullpen/magforum.aspx.

As a program note, the Lt. Governor’s portion of the program has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts.

Parking at the Cobb Energy Centre costs $5.

Along with MAG, the Governor Candidates’ Forum is being sponsored by the Georgia Drug Card, the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, the Georgia College of Emergency Physicians, the Georgia Neurological Society, the Georgia Orthopaedic Society, the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association, the Georgia Society of Dermatologists, and the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology.

With more than 6,000 members, MAG is the leading voice for physicians in Georgia. Monitor www.mag.org for the latest information.
