FreedomWorks PAC Gains Key Victories in “Super Tuesday” Elections

(BUSINESS WIRE)--The hard work and dedication of FreedomWorks PAC activists were rewarded at the close of a nationwide series of primary, run-off, and special elections held yesterday, June 8th. Two key conservative victories in Nevada and Georgia will be sure to advance FreedomWorks PAC’s ambitious “Take America Back in 2010” campaign agenda.

“It is so exciting to see a new generation of conservative leaders emerge in the ongoing fight for small government, lower taxes and more individual freedom”

In the Nevada Republican Senate primary, FreedomWorks PAC joined the likes of other national conservative groups including Club for Growth, Tea Party Express, and Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund, to propel small-government conservative Sharron Angle to a landslide victory with 40.1 percent of the 3-way vote.

Angle earned a “Champion of Freedom” endorsement from FreedomWorks PAC for her strong commitment to limited government, and will take on one –if not the biggest- target for the conservative movement this fall: Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Meanwhile, FreedomWorks PAC was also heavily engaged in yesterday’s special election to fill Georgia’s 9th Congressional District seat, supporting State Representative and longtime FreedomWorks ally Tom Graves. When all was said and done, Graves cruised to victory thanks to his campaign’s strict, limited government, fiscally conservative message and the hard work of FreedomWorks Georgia activists who engaged in “Get Out The Vote” (GOTV) phone calls and door-to-door literature drops on his behalf.

Graves won an impressive 12 out of 15 counties in the northern Georgia District, with 56 percent of the overall vote.

“It is so exciting to see a new generation of conservative leaders emerge in the ongoing fight for small government, lower taxes and more individual freedom,” commented Dick Armey, Chairman of FreedomWorks PAC. “Tom Graves and Sharron Angle have the principles and the promise necessary to defeat the culture of corruption in Washington and to take back the conservative majority in 2010.”

In addition to yesterday’s gains, FreedomWorks PAC has enjoyed success in other key early electoral contests. In Senate primary races in Kentucky and Pennsylvania, FreedomWorks PAC endorsed “Champions of Freedom” Rand Paul and Pat Toomey, who both won outright and easily. In Utah, PAC efforts played a significant role in ousting the long time big-government apologist Senator Bob Bennett, and advancing PAC endorsed candidate Mike Lee to a run-off election on June 22.

To continue the momentum this election cycle, FreedomWorks PAC has begun to mobilize for aggressive GOTV campaigns in House and Senate races all over the country. Campaign efforts will include volunteer phone banks, district door-to-door walks, and 72 hour teams that will ensure success for the true conservative Champions of Freedom, and defeat for those candidates that most threaten the limited government agenda.

Karen Handel: What did last night mean for Georgia?

As women candidates across America emerged victorious in last night’s primary, political pundits weighed in early noting that the outcome demonstrated that voters were disenchanted with politics as usual. Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman won their respective nominations for Senate and Governor. Sharron Angle secured the Senate nomination in Nevada, and Nikki Haley heads into South Carolina's Gubernatorial runoff with a strong lead. They are all to be congratulated.

But what the candidates had in common was not simply gender. They are all outsiders who are not part of the good-old-boy establishment. Fiorina and Whitman bring extensive business experience, while Angle and Haley took on the career politicians, and delivered a serious blow to politics as usual in their states.

And, in Georgia, journalists and voters are already speculating on what this will mean in the Governor's race here. The Fayette County Examiner weighed in first, asking this morning, "Could all of this mean a heavier support of women in the State of Georgia as Karen Handel makes her bid as the first woman, Republican or Democrat, to become governor?"

Clearly, notice has been served on career politicians.

Karen's main opponents in this race have all been in office 15, 20 and even 25 years. They are part of the system that has allowed our most serious challenges to go unanswered.

Our transportation system in Georgia has deteriorated during that time. There have been no long term solutions to our water issues. There has been only marginal improvement in education. And government spending spiraled out of control until they were forced to make cuts in a crisis. Does anyone really believe that the guys who helped create this mess have any idea how to get us out of it?

The status quo has brought us corruption and complacency. While in public office, two candidates and their business partners pocketed nearly $1 million doing business with the state. Another has taken $120,000 in illegal campaign contributions from executives whose business he regulates. Do we really want to trust them to lead our state?

How about a bold reformer like Karen Handel? She is the only candidate to offer real ethics reform. She proposes a $25 gift limit for elected officials and making the state legislature subject to open records like the rest of state government. They should no longer be able to operate in secret. And, the big one that our opponents hate, we will cut off their gravy train of profiting off of our tax dollars. We must put in place strict conflict of interest laws for our elected officials.

2010 may be the "year of the woman" but it is definitely the "the year of the outsider." It is the year voters say "we have had enough" and we take back our government. Karen is the leader who will do that. Join her "Bring it on" campaign today.

Senator Cecil Staton Endorses Handel for Governor

Joins Congressman Tom Price, House Majority Whip Edward Lindsey, Senator John Douglas, and 75 Elected Officials on Karen’s Team

Karen Handel announced today that State Senator Cecil Staton has joined her team and added his endorsement to those of Congressman Tom Price, House Majority Whip Edward Lindsey, Senator John Douglas, PSC Commissioner Chuck Eaton and 74 elected officials from across Georgia.

"I am really excited that Cecil has joined our team because he is a truly respected conservative leader in the Senate and brings a grassroots organization that is second to none in Bibb, Crawford, Houston, Jones, and Monroe Counties," Handel said. "Cecil and I worked hard together on a number of elections issues including Voter ID and I deeply respect his intellect and his tireless work ethic."

In endorsing Karen, Senator Staton said:

Karen’s personal story is a reflection of the promise of America. Karen’s life is an example of the positive results of hard work, strong values, and a solid faith. She is a hard worker who lives out true conservative values. Her integrity is beyond question. Sadie Fields Joins MacGinnitie Campaign

Doug MacGinnitie, candidate for Secretary of State, announced today the addition of Sadie Fields to his campaign staff. Fields is the former head of the Christian Coalition of Georgia and the Georgia Christian Alliance.

"We are excited to have Sadie working with us during the last weeks of our campaign for Secretary of State. She brings years of political experience to the table and is a welcome addition to our staff," MacGinnitie said.

Fields recently took a leave of absence as Chair of the Georgia Christian Alliance after having served in that position for 14 years; first as Chair of the Christian Coalition of Georgia and more recently the Georgia Christian Alliance.

"Doug MacGinnitie is a most impressive candidate. I met with him over a year ago - right after he made the decision to run. He has since traveled the state working hard to gain the confidence of Georgia voters. A successful businessman, Doug brings a fresh perspective to the office of Secretary of State. He is a man of character and integrity, and I am delighted to be a part of his campaign team," said Fields.

Statement from Doug MacGinnitie on Secretary of State Security Breech

Last night’s Fox 5 investigative report by Dale Russell was disturbing. I watched as the news reporter showed how to easily hack into corporate records at the Georgia Secretary of State’s office. As a businessman, who knows how hard it is to start up a business, I find this totally unacceptable.

At a time where Georgia can’t afford to impede job growth and job creation, we learn that the Secretary of State’s office has a major security breech when it comes to protecting the identity of the 700,000 Georgia business owners on file with the office. This not only affects small business owners already operating in Georgia, putting them at risk of identity theft, but it also affects prospective businesses looking to set up shop in our state. The current Secretary of State has let our business owners down and quite frankly should be embarrassed.

In the business world, technology has to pass two tests: functionality and security. Anytime you are dealing with an individuals’ personal, financial or business data, security should always be first. What we have here is not a minor technology glitch, but rather a major gap in priorities. When the incumbent spends time away from his desk on midday campaign fundraisers and golf outings, it is no surprise criminals view our Georgia business owners as a weak target for identity theft.

The Secretary of State’s office is a $35 million, 300 person executive office. If this debacle had occurred in the private sector, we would be facing a major lawsuit at best and shareholders would be looking for a new CEO. Georgia’s taxpayers and business owners deserve better.

As Secretary of State, my priority will be to protect our business owners, keep their confidential information safe and secure and at a minimum show up to work and do what the taxpayers pay me to do.

Respectfully,
Doug MacGinnitie

Deal vows to eliminate state 'marriage penalty' tax

Republican candidate for governor Nathan Deal announced today that he would eliminate the "marriage penalty" in the state's income tax system in order to stress the state's commitment to helping Georgia families.

"Marriage is the cornerstone of our families, and I want to commit my administration as governor to creating jobs and ensuring a better future for Georgia's families," Deal said. "Strong families benefit our communities, and our state policies should always seek to promote marriage rather than see it as a chance to take a few more dollars for the treasury."

Under Georgia tax law, a single filer claims a $2,300 standard deduction, but a married couple filing jointly can claim only a $3,000 standard deduction. Under Deal's plan, a married couple would be able to claim the same deduction per person as two single taxpayers: $4,600. To illustrate the point, if a married couple earns $50,000 total, their tax liability would equal $2,236. If two single filers each earned $25,000, equaling the same $50,000 in total, their tax liability would equal $2,020. The difference in tax liability results in a $216 "marriage penalty."

"As governor, I want to make sure business leaders know that Georgia is a great place to locate - that's a big part of how we bring high-paying jobs here," Deal said. "But it's just as important for our state to be a great place for families, with a low cost of living, high quality of life, low taxes, efficient transportation and great schools. Targeting the state marriage tax penalty for elimination sends the message that we're a state that prioritizes family values. We send the wrong message by penalizing Georgians for being married, and we can right that wrong."

The repeal of the Georgia marriage penalty is the second plank of the Deal tax reform plan. Two weeks ago, Deal released his plan to attract jobs by reducing the corporate tax to 4 percent from 6 percent. Next, the Deal for Governor campaign will release its broader economic reform plan.

Nathan Deal has championed tax relief for Americans throughout his career in public service and voted against every tax increase and for every tax cut that came to a vote in Congress. His proven record as a tax-cutter has won him top ratings from the National Taxpayers Union, Americans for Tax Reform, Club for Growth, Americans For Prosperity and the American Conservative Union.
