It's About The Mission And The Message, Not The Money
Gerry Purcell, the conservative, free-market candidate for Georgia Insurance Commissioner, took issue today with his opponents' and the mainstream media's assertion that the Insurance Commissioner's race has been narrowed to a field of two candidates based on their high amounts of fundraising from lobbyists, PACs, and other special interest groups.
The focus on special interest money while excluding voter sentiment is a disturbing trend, according to Purcell. "I am not the candidate of the lobbyists or the favored candidate of the current commissioner, and I don't think that is what the voters are looking for either. We need a fresh start in Georgia."
"To date, we have won 33 out of 34 straw polls and have captured the grassroots momentum of the conservative Republican and independent base," said Purcell. The insider candidates have not even been close in these polls. "Numerous groups have lined up behind us including the 912 Action Network. For my opponents and the media to insinuate that grassroots voices don't matter, for them to imply that politics as usual will win this race based on money alone denies Georgians the ability to have their voices heard."
"I'm proud to have earned the support of Georgians of all stripes and political persuasions who understand that those who led us into this mess are not the ones who will lead us out of it," Purcell added. "It's time we had an Insurance Commissioner who takes ethics seriously. That's why I have pledged to adhere to a no wiggle room, zero-tolerance ethics policy: I will accept no gifts, no meals, no entertainment, no hunting trips, no trips to bowl games, etc., unless I pay my own way. That is the policy of many corporations including Walmart, and that will be my policy. Purcell is not for sale!"
"Let's get about the business of making Georgia the free-market insurance model for the nation," Purcell said.
Gerry Purcell is a life-long conservative and native of Toccoa, Georgia. A graduate of Truett-McConnell College and the Chaminade University of Honolulu, Gerry began his career as a military intelligence officer, earning several distinguished honors including the George Marshall Leadership Award. Gerry entered the corporate world with Mobil Oil, where he turned around five failing multi-million dollar business units. After a bout with cancer at age 29, he started his career over in health insurance, which he considers his calling. Gerry is now nationally recognized as a free-market health care and insurance expert, saving millions for companies and local and state governments nationwide. Gerry and his wife Julianne currently reside in Alpharetta. Gerry launched his campaign for Insurance Commissioner in March 2009 with the intention of bringing new leadership and real, common-sense solutions to Georgia government.

Olens Goes Up on Broadcast Television
"The "Fighter" script:

Oxendine for Governor Raises $870,000 in Two Months
Today, Republican gubernatorial front-runner John Oxendine reported his second quarter financial disclosure. The campaign posted $869,550 in contributions and ended the quarter with $1,831,907 cash-on-hand (COH). Because state law does not allow sitting office holders to raise money during the legislative session, the campaign could only accept contributions in May and June – a constraint that did not affect the other major candidates in the race.
“John has a tremendous vision for transforming state government and bringing jobs back to Georgia,” said campaign manager Stephen Puetz. “The fundraising success our campaign had this quarter ensures that we will be able to effectively promote John’s message of downsizing government, scrapping the state income tax and fixing our infrastructure problems."
The $869,550 raised does not include loans or in-kind contributions and the COH figure is after paying for two weeks of aggressive TV advertising.

Eric Johnson: What Roy Doesn't Want You To Know
It’s tough out there right now. Families and businesses across the state are fighting to make ends meet. And what does Roy Barnes think we should do? Raise taxes!
Our state constitution requires us to pass a balanced budget. Luckily, unlike the folks in Washington, government in Georgia can’t run-up massive deficits. Roy’s promises so far total more than $2 billion. The only way he can pay for that is higher taxes. And the scariest thing of all is that he’s just getting started!
Like you, I know that we can best jumpstart our economy by getting government off the backs and out of the pockets of families and businesses. I’ve laid out a commonsense plan for tax relief. In a Johnson administration, we will:
· Reward small businesses that hire new employees with tax credits.
· Eliminate the sales tax on energy used in manufacturing so we can compete in the global economy.
· Give our tax code a comprehensive, top to bottom review to make it broader, lower, simpler, and fairer.
· Make it harder for the legislature to ever raise your taxes again by passing a constitutional amendment requiring a 2/3 super majority for any tax increases.
And Roy? He’s out there promising anybody that will listen everything under the sun. We all know exactly how he’s going to pay for it- job killing higher taxes. While he might try to hide it, there are no talking points slick enough to cover up the truth. He might not believe it, but voters are smart enough to figure it out.
This November, Georgians will face a clear choice- do they want to support us and our proven, tax-cutting plan to put Georgia back to work or are they going to go with Georgia’s slickest trial lawyer.
That’s just the fight we want to have and a fight I know we’ll win.

Johnson Denounces Feds’ Lawsuit against Arizona
“As Governor, I will enforce the law if the federal government won’t.”
Senator Eric Johnson, Republican candidate for Governor, today condemned the U.S. Justice Department’s lawsuit aimed at overturning Arizona’s tough new anti-illegal immigration law.
“With this reprehensible lawsuit, our federal government has gone beyond incompetence or indifference on illegal immigration. They are now working on behalf of lawbreakers and against the will of law abiding citizens,” said Johnson. “As Governor, I will enforce the law if the federal government won’t. I will defend the taxpayers. And I will protect the jobs of American citizens and legal residents of this state.”
Johnson is the only candidate for Governor who has proposed a comprehensive plan to crackdown on illegal immigration, which not only adopts provisions of the Arizona law, but also specifically addresses the drain of illegal immigration on our education and healthcare systems. His detailed plan includes:
· Incentivize local law enforcement’s use of 287(g) and Secure Communities by increasing the per diems the state gives to counties to house prisoners in their jails if they enroll in those programs.
· Require all state law enforcement agencies to participate in 287(g) and Secure Communities. 287(g) and Secure Communities are programs operated by the Department of Homeland Security that allow local law enforcement agencies to establish the citizenship status of those apprehended for crimes.
· Bring the Board of Regents and the Technical College System of Georgia under the same strict citizenship verification process as other state agencies.
· Collect citizenship data upon enrollment in K-12 schools to know the cost of the federal government’s failure to secure our borders and hold them responsible for the cost.
· Collect citizenship data in emergency rooms to know the cost of the federal government’s failure to secure our borders and hold them responsible for the cost.
· Eliminate jobs for illegal immigrants by holding companies that repeatedly hire illegal immigrants responsible.
When Johnson was President Pro Tem of the State Senate in 2005, Georgia passed what was at the time the strongest anti-illegal immigration law in the nation. This law served as a model for many other states, including Arizona. He was also the first candidate to call on Georgia colleges and universities to verify citizenship upon enrollment and has expressed support for Arizona’s new immigration laws.

Former Secretary of State and candidate for Governor Karen Handel today called on Roy Barnes to take a stand, one way or another, on the Obama Administration's lawsuit to stop Arizona from enforcing its illegal immigration law.
"A Handel Administration will say "bring it on" to President Obama and pass legislation similar to what they have in Arizona. Washington politicians caused this problem by ignoring their responsibilities to secure our national borders for the past 20 years, it is hypocritical and unconscionable for them to try and stop states who must now deal with the problems Washington created."
"The people of Georgia deserve to know where Roy stands on illegal immigration. Does he support a state's right to enforce immigration laws? Roy can't have it both ways – running away from being a Democrat while remaining silent on one of their most brazen intrusions into the rights of states to enforce their laws," Handel said.
Handel is committed to passing an immigration law similar to the one being challenged in Arizona. Last week, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer endorsed Handel for Governor saying, "I know Karen Handel. She has the experience, courage and tenacity that make her the best candidate to be Governor. Karen will fight to pass similar illegal immigration laws in Georgia. If President Obama tries to stop her, she will tell him to 'Bring it On."

Berrien County (Valdosta) Chamber hosting Political Forum
The Berrien County Chamber of Commerce will host a political forum on Tuesday, July 6 beginning at 5:30 pm at the Berrien County Administrative Building, 201 South Davis Street. The forum will take place on the second floor in the courtroom. Dr. Fred Knowles, Valdosta State University criminal justice professor will serve as the forum moderator. Seating is likely to be limited, so please arrive early to ensure a seat. Below is a list of the candidates and their respective races that have been invited to participate in the forum. The public is encouraged to prepare questions for the candidates. All candidate questions must be submitted in writing and will be drawn at random by the forum moderator.
